Mount Argopuro, located in East Java, Indonesia, is a sacred and legendary mountain with a trail that is as challenging as it is awe-inspiring. Known as the longest mountain trails in Java, the hike to the summit is a true test of endurance, taking anywhere from 4 to 5 days to complete. But it’s not just the physical challenge that makes Mount Argopuro special.
The mountain carries a deep historical and spiritual significance, particularly for those who walk its trails with respect for the myths, the land, and its people.

As someone who spends much of my time in the mountains and has a passion for sensory ethnography, this hike was more than just a physical journey.
It was an opportunity to immerse myself in the mountain’s landscape and understand it in a deeply personal and embodied way. Walking the ancient trails of Argopuro allowed me to connect not just to the land but to the stories embedded in its very soil, stories that have been passed down for generations - Terra Incognita, the moment when I stepped back to 125 years ago.
The Challenge of the Argopuro Trail
The hike to the top of Mount Argopuro is not for the faint of heart. The trail is long, rugged, and varied, with steep ascents, narrow ridges, and dense forests.
It is considered one of the longest and most challenging hiking routes in Java, stretching over 43 kilometers through the Argopuro Nature Reserve.
I began my journey from the village of Baderan, one of the common entry points to the mountain. The trail starts with a steep hike through dense jungle. The air is thick with moisture, the ground uneven, and the forest alive with the sounds of birds and insects. With each step, the weight of the mountain’s history begins to settle on you, the immensity of the land making you feel small, yet deeply connected to it.

As I ascended, I couldn’t help but marvel at the diversity of the landscape. The lower reaches of the mountain are covered with lush, tropical forests, rich in biodiversity. These forests, however, eventually give way to alpine meadows, with sparse vegetation and panoramic views that open up to vast expanses of wilderness.
The higher I hiked, the more I felt like I was walking through another world, far removed from the noise and chaos of modern life.

The Legendary History of Mount Argopuro
But Mount Argopuro is not just any mountain, it is steeped in legend and cultural significance.
One of the most well-known myths associated with this mountain is the tale of Dewi Rengganis and her sacred lake.
Dewi Rengganis, the goddess who is believed to reside on the mountain, is a figure of both beauty and power in Javanese mythology. According to local legend, she was a celestial being who descended to Earth and created the Dewi Rengganis Lake, a sacred body of water high on the slopes of Mount Argopuro.
This lake is believed to have mystical properties, and many locals believe that it is a site of great spiritual significance, where offerings are made and prayers are said.

As I hiked, the stories of Dewi Rengganis echoed in my mind. I imagined her walking the same trails, gazing down upon the verdant forests and tranquil lakes.
These legends added a layer of meaning to the physical experience of hiking the mountain, as I was not just traversing a natural landscape but a sacred space imbued with spiritual energy.
The sound of the wind in the trees, the rustling of leaves underfoot, the murmurs of distant streams, all of it seemed to whisper the mountain’s ancient stories.
The Sensory Experience of the Mountain

One of the most powerful aspects of hiking Mount Argopuro was the sensory experience it offered.
As a researcher and advocate for sensory ethnography, I have long been fascinated by the way that our bodies interact with the land.
This hike was an opportunity to truly immerse myself in the environment, feeling the textures of the rocks, the temperature of the air, and the sounds that surrounded me. The smell of the wet earth after a light rain, the taste of the fresh mountain air, the crunch of leaves beneath my shoes, all these small but significant sensory moments gave me a deeper understanding of the mountain.
It was as if the land itself was communicating with me, offering me an embodied connection to the history and the people who have walked these trails for centuries.
At times, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer immensity of the landscape. The mountain seemed endless, stretching out before me in all directions. Yet, in these moments of quiet reflection, I realized that the journey was as much about slowing down and listening to the land as it was about reaching the summit. It was a humbling reminder of how we, as humans, are just one small part of the intricate web of life that sustains our planet.
Sustainability and the Role of Women in Conservation

As I hiked through the dense forests and past the ancient trees, I was reminded of the importance of preserving these landscapes. Mount Argopuro, like many other sacred mountains in Indonesia, is a natural treasure, home to a diverse range of species and ecosystems. But these environments are increasingly at risk due to deforestation, climate change, and overexploitation.
This is where the role of mountain communities and women becomes critical. In many traditional cultures, women are the primary caretakers of the land, responsible for tasks such as farming, water collection, and managing local resources.
As I reflected on the experiences of women in these communities, I realized that they are often the ones most connected to the land, yet their voices are often silenced in conversations about conservation and environmental policy.
During my time in the local villages near Mount Argopuro, I had the privilege of speaking with several women who are deeply involved in preserving their local environment. Their knowledge of the land, passed down through generations, is invaluable in creating sustainable solutions to the challenges they face.
By empowering these women and elevating their voices, we can create more inclusive and effective approaches to conservation and climate action.
Lessons from the Mountain

As I reached the summit of Mount Argopuro, exhausted but exhilarated, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude and humility. The journey had been physically demanding, but it had also been spiritually enriching.
I had not only walked through the land but had also connected with its stories, its legends, and its people.
The mountain had taught me many things. It has taught me the value of slow travel and deep listening, of paying attention to the sensory details of the world around us. It has reminded me of the importance of preserving sacred landscapes and respecting the traditional knowledge of the communities that have lived in harmony with these environments for centuries.
Mount Argopuro, with its legendary history, challenging trails, and breathtaking beauty, is a powerful symbol of the connection between people and the planet.
It reminds us that we are all part of a larger story, one that is shaped by the land, by the myths we tell, and by the actions we take to protect the future of our world.
A Call to Action

As I descended from the mountain, I thought about how our relationship with nature needs to change. The experiences of hiking Mount Argopuro, of immersing myself in its legends, its landscapes, and its people, have reinforced my belief in the power of sustainable living and environmental conservation.
If we are to truly protect places like Mount Argopuro, we must listen to the voices of those who know it best, the mountain communities, especially the women, who hold the key to preserving our natural heritage.
The legends of Dewi Rengganis and the sacred lake on Mount Argopuro remind us that the earth is not just a resource to be exploited but a living, breathing entity that deserves our respect and protection. As we continue to face the challenges of climate change, let us remember the lessons of this mountain, of listening, of connecting, and of living sustainably with the land.
The journey does not end at the summit; it is a continuous, evolving relationship with the earth that requires care, patience, and a deep understanding of our place within it.
