Jeff는 태평양 북서부에서 가족과 함께 배낭여행을 하며 자랐습니다. 초경량 배낭여행과는 거리가 멀었지만, 50파운드씩 짐을 싣고 호수까지 3마일을 하이킹하며 주말 동안 낚시와 캠핑을 즐겼습니다. 2살 때 제프는 이러한 여행 중 한 번은 지아르디아에 걸렸고, 또 한 번은 모기에 너무 많이 물려 어린이집에서 수두에 걸린 것으로 생각했습니다.

배낭여행은 낚시, 통나무 뗏목 만들기, 가재 잡기와 함께 진행되었습니다. 첫 번째 스루 하이킹은 제프가 20살 때 PCT를 시작했을 때였으며, 그 이후로 16개의 트레일 속도 기록을 세우고 3만 마일 이상을 하이킹했습니다.
